Are we entering a Little Ice Age?

Well it has happened before! The last Ice Age ended about 10,000 years ago, but severe cold spells have hit Britain several times since. The extremely cold winters of 1947 and 1963 easily fall within living memory. Further back in time, the Victorians held the Frost Fairs on the frozen Thames.

One of the scariest things is that a severe mini Ice Age could happen in a matter of months and has done before. Scientists have shown that 12,800 years ago a mini Ice Age gripped Europe in a just a few months. Isotope evidence from lake sediments in Ireland show that the temperature quickly plummeted as the warming waters of the Gulf Stream stopped.

In short, most scientists think it is very unlikely we are entering a new Ice Age. The current cold conditions are a blip in the warming trend.

In the mean time, wrap up warm during the cold weather and keep an eye on the forecast!
